What is Snapchat? How does it work?

Snapchat is a mobile application that has been active since 2011 that is able to send short messages but also videos up to 10 seconds in length. We can share these videos in the “My Story” feed, or by sharing it with a person from our friends list. The texts are interesting because they disappear from the feed after being read.

Snapchat and AR

Since around 2015, many filters have become available that can customise and enhance your face, and can transform you into a cat or dog, or some other kind of animal or being. Some are activated by certain changes in the face muscles, and create effects based on them. These filters are so popular that rarely does a day go by, when a new Snapchat filter isn’t born, and they are constantly changing and evolving.

How do you advertise on Snapchat?

Although using Snapchat as a marketing platform is relatively new in Hungary, it has been around for a while in the USA, and there are different avenues of advertising for those interested in popularising their service or product. You can make mini videos, for instance, which are 10 seconds long, and the viewer has a chance to click on more videos with related content. If they choose to do so, they will see a short description of the service or product, along with more videos and pictures.

Using geolocation filters also provides an excellent means of advertising. You can use locations, for example a shopping mall, and use the geofilters to show not just the city that the mall is in, but also the shops and products available at this mall, including your own product or service.
The third and most creative way to use Snapchat for advertising purposes is to merge the AR and geofilters. The results won’t soon be forgotten.
